old school

March, 2008

i’m not really a big fan of the digital vs analogue discussion, so i won’t go into it. but what i like about ‘old school’ photography is the fact that it’s a chemical process. not because i like fiddling with chemicals all that much (i don’t) but it restores a sense of childlike wonder every time i see it happening.

take this image for example, it’s a scan of a proof print i made to determine what time i should use for a bigger print. proofs are just that: small prints that are meant to be discarded. Because i didn’t fix it properly, the print began to react with air and light and just like that you get something that surpasses time and place.

the print has a vintage feeling to it, it looks crappy, true, but at the same time, there’s more, it has a patina. And that is something that digital photography hasn’t given me yet.
